MTG PRINTING GUIDE

Edgar Markov

Edgar Markov’s printing guide begins with a foil Commander-deck card, not a booster-pack nonfoil. Later Judge artwork and Innistrad Remastered add new artists, a fang frame, a retro frame and a serialized headliner. His Vampire identity gives those choices a natural deck-building context, but selecting an elaborate printing does not improve the rules or certify a stronger deck.

RULES & FORMAT CONTEXT

Edgar Markov in a deck

Edgar is a red, white and black legendary Vampire Knight. Eminence creates a Vampire token when you cast another Vampire spell while Edgar is in the command zone or on the battlefield, and his attack trigger distributes +1/+1 counters to your Vampires. These are casting and attacking incentives, not a promise that any pile of Vampires is structurally sound.

Current catalogue data lists Edgar as Commander-legal but banned as commander in Duel Commander; those are different formats. Deck Studio can use the selected legal commander, infer a deck identity and expose role filters and Deck Health. Review ramp, draw, interaction and your own strategy choices; this guide does not guarantee generated-deck power or a formal bracket.

PRINTING HISTORY

From the debut to later physical editions

Commander 2017 released on 25 August 2017. The standard-size Edgar is mythic C17 #36, by Volkan Baga, and foil-only. The oversized Commander 2017 record is a different physical object; a display card should not be confused with the normal-size deck entry.

The 2021 Judge #3 credits Martina Fackova and is foil-only. This supplies another illustration rather than simply a foil option missing from the original—because the original was already foil.

Innistrad Remastered brought Edgar into a booster product in January 2025. Regular #234 and retro #428 reuse Baga’s art and offer nonfoil and traditional foil. Showcase fang #328 changes the artist to Betty Jiang and also offers both finishes.

The same release’s #491 is Jack Hughes’ serialized movie-poster headliner with double rainbow foiling. Wizards identifies 500 serialized copies. It is not a nonserialized movie-poster finish that can be applied to #234 or #328, and a digital render cannot authenticate its serial number.

ARTWORK & FRAME COMPARISON

Which differences change the illustration?

Compare INR #234 with #428 when the question is modern versus retro frame while keeping Baga’s image. Compare C17 #36 separately if documenting the actual debut matters. A retro frame is not evidence that Edgar existed in an earlier Magic set.

Fackova’s Judge and Jiang’s fang treatment are artistic alternatives, not merely border changes. The Jack Hughes headliner adds another image and a movie-poster presentation. Decide whether the goal is original art, a Gothic frame or a poster collectible before discussing finish.

For a Vampire-themed deck, our starting pair is #234 nonfoil and #328 nonfoil. They keep the finish constant and make the choice about the illustration and fang frame. The serialized card is not required for that visual identity.

FOILS & SPECIAL TREATMENTS

Choose the printing before its finish

C17 #36 and PJ21 #3 are foil-only; the ordinary and retro INR versions finally supply nonfoil routes to Baga’s image. Do not describe a Commander 2017 nonfoil as the normal original without checking that it is not an oversized or other record.

INR #491’s double rainbow foil and serialization belong together in the verified headliner record. #328 traditional foil is a separate, nonserialized choice. Check the exact number, size and finish before making a collector comparison.

MANASCOUT RECOMMENDATIONS

Which printing suits your collection?

Debut collection: C17 #36 standard-size foil is the historical reference. Keep oversized display copies labelled separately.

Original art without foil: compare INR #234 and retro #428. They retain the image while offering a different frame preference.

A Vampire-led visual identity: start with Jiang’s #328, then compare Fackova’s Judge image. Choose nonfoil or traditional foil only where the selected entry supports it.

Headliner collection: research #491 as its own serialized collectible. Inspect the physical card; neither a higher price nor a serial number changes Edgar’s gameplay identity.
