UNDERSTANDING MAGIC PRINTINGS

Why the exact card printing matters

A Magic: The Gathering card is defined by its gameplay identity, but individual printings can look dramatically different. A single card may have an original release, modern reprints, showcase artwork, borderless versions, promotional releases and several different foil treatments.

For collectors, details such as the set code, collector number, artist, frame style and finish help identify an exact printing. These differences can also influence which version someone prefers, regardless of whether the gameplay text is the same.

ManaScout's permanent card guides provide information about notable versions and artwork. The live printing explorer lets you inspect individual releases and their available Scryfall price data.

COLLECTOR QUESTIONS

Choosing the right Magic printing

How do I find every printing of an MTG card?

Search for the card on ManaScout and open its printing comparison. The available records show set names, release dates, collector numbers, artwork, finishes and price information supplied by Scryfall.

Are foil and nonfoil versions different cards?

Usually they have the same gameplay identity, but different physical finishes. Some Magic releases include traditional foil, etched foil, surge foil or other specialty treatments. Availability depends on the specific printing.

What do set codes and collector numbers mean?

A set code identifies a Magic release. The collector number identifies a card or version within that release. Together they help distinguish specific printings that share a card name.

Are ManaScout's prices current shop prices?

No. ManaScout displays available Scryfall price fields, with approximate GBP conversion where possible. Prices may be delayed, incomplete or different from actual marketplace listings.

Can a banned card still have a printing guide?

Yes. A printing guide concerns the history, artwork and physical versions of a card. Tournament and Commander legality depend on the format and its current rules, not on whether a card has collectible printings.

Can't find your card in the guides?

ManaScout's search explorer covers far more cards than the permanent editorial directory. Search any card name to compare its printings.
