MTG PRINTING GUIDE
Fierce Guardianship
Fierce Guardianship can answer a noncreature spell without its normal mana payment while you control a commander. The collecting decision is more specific than choosing a free counterspell: Randy Vargas' original, Randy Gallegos' borderless art, Mike Burns' Pixel Perfect interpretation and Ina Wong's Avatar artwork belong to different editions and finish families. This guide identifies the card behind each description.
QUICK ANSWER
When was Fierce Guardianship first printed?
Fierce Guardianship debuted in Commander 2020 in 2020. C20 #35 is a rare illustrated by Randy Vargas and is nonfoil only. It was included in the Timeless Wisdom deck.
Collector shortcut: CMM #94 keeps Vargas' artwork, #489 is the etched record and #694 changes the artist to Randy Gallegos. SLD #1823 is Mike Burns' Pixel Perfect card; Avatar Eternal #307 is a nonfoil-only entry by Ina Wong.
HOW IT WORKS
It counters noncreature spells, not every spell
Fierce Guardianship normally costs {2}{U} and counters a target noncreature spell. If you control a commander, you may cast it without paying its mana cost. A commander only in the command zone does not meet the control condition.
It is enough to control any commander, including another player's commander. With two commanders, controlling one is sufficient. The source's ruling also explains that opponents cannot interrupt the casting process by removing your commander to make you pay the normal cost.
The alternative cost does not broaden the target restriction. A creature spell is not a legal target merely because it threatens your board, and an activated or triggered ability is not a noncreature spell. Compare Force of Will or Counterspell for a different target range, and Deflecting Swat for redirection. Applicable additional costs and cost increases still matter when casting without paying the mana cost.
FIRST PRINTING & REPRINTS
Commander 2020, Commander Masters and two alternative-art directions
C20 #35 establishes the original Vargas illustration and the nonfoil Commander-deck release. A later foil with that image is therefore a separate edition rather than a foil finish available on the original C20 entry.
Commander Masters in August 2023 provides three useful references. Standard #94 uses Vargas' art in nonfoil and traditional foil. Etched #489 retains that artist, while borderless #694 introduces Randy Gallegos' illustration. The two Randys are distinct credited artists.
Pixel Perfect | Extra Life 2024 arrived through Secret Lair in October 2024. Its Fierce Guardianship is SLD #1823, illustrated by Mike Burns, in nonfoil and rainbow-foil editions. Wizards identifies the video-game-inspired presentation and both editions in its Extra Life feature.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Eternal adds TLE #307 in November 2025, with Ina Wong's artwork and nonfoil-only availability. This supplies another setting-specific choice without creating a foil option for every Avatar entry.

ART & TREATMENTS
Two different Randys, pixel art and an Avatar illustration
If the original Vargas image is the attraction, compare C20 #35 with CMM #94 and #489. You can change release identity or surface while retaining the illustration. Switching to Gallegos' #694 instead changes the art as well as removing the conventional border.
Burns' Pixel Perfect card deliberately uses a video-game-inspired visual language. Its appeal can be the artist and presentation rather than simply being a Secret Lair copy. Keep #1823 in the reference so that it is not confused with other Secret Lair records.
Wong's TLE #307 provides another interpretation for an Avatar collection. Compare the complete image with the CMM and Pixel Perfect alternatives before selecting a finish, because there is no single illustration offered across all those product families.
FOILS & PREMIUM FINISHES
Original nonfoil, traditional foil, etched or rainbow?
C20 #35 is nonfoil only. For Vargas' artwork in a later foil, compare traditional foil CMM #94 with etched #489. The latter is its own record and is etched only.
Gallegos' borderless CMM #694 comes in nonfoil and traditional foil. Burns' SLD #1823 comes in nonfoil and rainbow foil. The treatment label should be matched to the actual set and number rather than using foil, etched and rainbow as interchangeable descriptions.
Wong's TLE #307 is nonfoil only in its catalogue record. A general statement that Avatar products contain foils does not establish a foil version of that entry. The shared shimmer is illustrative and cannot reproduce the physical surfaces or condition of an offered card.
WHICH ONE?
Which Fierce Guardianship printing should you choose?
For the debut: choose C20 #35 and the original nonfoil Vargas presentation. If a later release is acceptable, compare it with standard CMM #94.
For a playing budget: compare currently available nonfoils across the standard and alternative-art entries in comparable condition. Let the actual listings decide the price order rather than assuming every special frame commands the same premium.
For Vargas' art in foil: choose between CMM #94 traditional foil and #489 etched. For a borderless illustration in a choice of ordinary finishes, compare Gallegos' #694.
For a themed collection: Burns' #1823 suits a Pixel Perfect display, while Wong's TLE #307 suits Avatar artwork. The latter is a nonfoil choice; the former also has a rainbow-foil edition.

Compare CMM #94 against #694 to decide whether you want Vargas or Gallegos first. Then add the Pixel Perfect and Avatar versions as distinct artistic directions. Make the finish decision within the chosen image instead of letting a generic premium label make that decision for you.
