MTG PRINTING GUIDE

Jeweled Lotus

Jeweled Lotus has two histories to keep separate: its physical editions and its Commander legality. It debuted as a commander-specific mana artifact in 2020, acquired spectacular treatments in 2023, then was banned in Commander in 2024. That ban does not erase the printings, but it must be part of any recommendation to someone seeking a deck copy.

RULES & FORMAT CONTEXT

Jeweled Lotus in a deck

The card sacrifices for three mana of one colour, restricted to casting your commander. It is not Black Lotus, and it is not the general-purpose one-mana burst of Lotus Petal.

Commander status checked 7 November 2026: banned. Do not buy an edition expecting ordinary Commander legality. A private playgroup agreement is a separate discussion and does not change the official list. The guide and explorer distinguish collectible identity from Deck Studio’s current construction checks.

PRINTING HISTORY

From the debut to later physical editions

Commander Legends released on 20 November 2020. Its mythic #319 credits Alayna Danner and has nonfoil and foil copies. Extended-art #695 belongs to the same release and artist, with its own number and both finishes; it is not an earlier original or automatically a foil.

Commander Masters followed on 4 August 2023. Regular #396 returns to Danner’s image. Foil-etched #611 is a distinct etched entry using that art, rather than a finish that can be assigned to every Lotus printing.

CMM #702 changes to Olena Richards’ frame-break artwork. #1066 is its textured-foil counterpart. Wizards explicitly identifies Jeweled Lotus among the set’s textured treatments. These physical records predate the Commander ban; their existence does not establish present permission to play the card.

Wizards reproduced the Commander Rules Committee announcement banning Jeweled Lotus on 23 September 2024. The current official banned list still includes it at this review. Treat launch-era Commander marketing and current legality as different dated facts.

Finish labels belong to the individual source record. An etched or textured treatment is not an extra finish invented for every edition. A missing price is unknown, not zero.

ARTWORK & FRAME COMPARISON

Which differences change the illustration?

CMR #319 and #695 offer a useful same-artist, standard-versus-extended comparison. CMM #396 and etched #611 provide another way to keep Danner’s image while changing the surface and product.

Richards’ #702 is a genuinely different illustration with the frame-break presentation. Textured #1066 retains that art family; the extra treatment does not make it a new card or an additional kind of mana source.

We suggest comparing a nonfoil #319 with a nonfoil #702 first. Once the image is chosen, the finish decision becomes easier to explain than a single vague search for the “best Lotus”.

FOILS & SPECIAL TREATMENTS

Choose the printing before its finish

Nonfoil, traditional foil, etched and textured are not interchangeable labels. #611 is etched-only; #1066 is textured foil-only. Regular #396 and borderless #702 have nonfoil and traditional foil options.

A textured foil should be identified by the exact #1066 catalogue record and the physical copy’s surface. ManaScout’s animated shimmer cannot authenticate texture, condition or a seller’s description. No serialized Jeweled Lotus is established by this researched shortlist.

MANASCOUT RECOMMENDATIONS

Which printing suits your collection?

For the debut: CMR #319 is the reference. Choose #695 if you prefer the expanded original presentation while retaining the launch release.

For an alternate-art display: start with #702 nonfoil. Compare traditional foil and #1066 textured only after deciding that Richards’ image is the attraction.

For Danner’s art in a special finish: compare #611 etched with a traditional foil of #319 or #396. These are collector preferences, not an investment or price ranking.

For Commander play: choose a different legal card, not a different printing of this banned card. Recheck the official list before relying on any older recommendation.
