Teferi's Protection

Teferi’s Protection began as a nonfoil Commander 2017 card by Chase Stone. Its later history offers Judge foil, Kieran Yanner and Steve Argyle Secret Lairs, two Mystical Archive interpretations and Greg Staples’ borderless Masters art. The collector choice should distinguish a new illustration from a different foil surface on a familiar image.

HOW IT WORKS

Phasing and protection do not mean leaving the game

Teferi’s Protection costs {2}{W}, is an Instant and has a white colour identity. Until your next turn your life total cannot change and you gain protection from everything; your permanents phase out. The spell then exiles itself.

Phasing out does not make a permanent leave the battlefield, so phasing in does not produce an enters trigger. You remain in the game. Protection and a fixed life total are specific rules effects rather than a guarantee against every possible way to lose.

This brief rules identity is useful when comparing editions: a new portrait, manga-inspired frame or crossover title does not improve the spell’s protection.

PRINTING HISTORY

From Commander 2017 to distinct foil and artwork families

Commander 2017 (C17) #8 debuted on 25 August 2017 at rare, illustrated by Chase Stone, and is nonfoil-only. Judge Gift Cards 2018 J18 #5 reuses Stone’s artwork as a foil-only promo.

Secret Lair’s Extra Life 2020 #164 brings Kieran Yanner artwork in foil only. This is a different painting from the original, not simply a Judge card in a new package.

Strixhaven Mystical Archive in April 2021 adds global #11 by Minttu Hynninen and Japanese alternate-art #74 by So-Taro. Both have nonfoil, traditional foil and etched foil options.

Double Masters 2022 supplies regular #32 with Stone’s image, borderless #343 by Greg Staples, and etched #424 with Stone art. These are same-set variants with different artwork and finish relationships.

Secret Lair’s Sheldon’s Spellbook #1691 follows in 2024 with borderless Steve Argyle art and nonfoil/foil availability. The more recent crossover catalogue includes Avatar: The Last Airbender Eternal #7, credited to Viacom, and Marvel Universe #51, T’Challa’s Protection, credited to Jack Kirby. Both crossover records offer nonfoil and traditional foil.

ARTWORK & FRAMES

Follow the painting, then the surface

Chase Stone: C17 #8, J18 #5 and 2X2 #32/#424 share the original artwork family. The set, frame and finish can differ without a new painting.

Yanner, Staples and Argyle: SLD #164, 2X2 #343 and SLD #1691 each supply a separate illustration. The two Secret Lair entries have different finish availability, so “Secret Lair foil” is not precise enough.

Hynninen and So-Taro: STA #11 and #74 are different artistic interpretations in the same Mystical Archive release. The latter is the Japanese-language artwork record.

Viacom and Kirby: TLE #7 uses Avatar Source Material imagery. MAR #51 displays T’Challa’s Protection but keeps Teferi’s Protection’s underlying rules identity. An alternate display name does not create another independently playable copy for a singleton deck.

FOILS & PREMIUM FINISHES

Judge foil, Secret Lair foil and etched are distinct choices

C17 #8 is nonfoil-only. J18 #5 and Extra Life SLD #164 are traditional-foil-only. Sheldon’s Spellbook SLD #1691 has nonfoil and traditional foil; the Extra Life edition’s finish restriction should not be transferred to it.

STA #11 and #74 each offer nonfoil, traditional foil and etched foil. In Double Masters 2022, regular #32 and borderless #343 have the ordinary two finishes, while #424 is etched foil only. It uses Stone’s original artwork, not Staples’ borderless painting.

The Avatar and Marvel Source Material rows have nonfoil and traditional foil availability. Neither a crossover frame nor a generic catalogue foil flag establishes surge, fracture or serialized treatment for these records.

WHICH PRINTING?

Which Teferi’s Protection printing should you choose?

For the original: C17 #8 preserves the debut art and preconstructed-product identity. For that artwork in a promo foil, compare J18 #5.

For a conventional later copy: 2X2 #32 offers nonfoil and foil. For Staples’ alternate borderless image, choose #343; for etched Stone art, identify #424.

For Secret Lair: select #164 for Yanner’s Extra Life illustration or #1691 for Argyle’s Sheldon’s Spellbook art. Only #1691 offers a nonfoil option.

For Archive or crossover art: compare the exact illustration, language and display title before the surface. A version named T’Challa’s Protection is still this spell’s card identity.

◇ MANASCOUT PERSPECTIVE

ManaScout pick: SLD #1691 nonfoil against C17 #8

Our artwork-led starting pair is Sheldon’s Spellbook #1691 nonfoil and Commander 2017 #8 nonfoil. Argyle and Stone give you a clear illustration comparison without making reflectivity the deciding factor.

If you want an etched finish, compare STA #11/#74 with 2X2 #424 next. Choose the underlying image first; there is no single premium finish shared across all Teferi’s Protection artwork.
