MTG PRINTING GUIDE

The Theorist, Jace Beleren

The Theorist, Jace Beleren is a specific Reality Fracture card, not another printing of Jace, the Mind Sculptor. Its verified family includes Ekaterina Burmak’s regular card, Miles Johnston’s braintwister art, Yukie Tajima’s Japan Showcase and ONIKU kuitai’s later Secret Lair Bundle promo. This is a focused product-and-art comparison rather than a fabricated history of older Jace reprints.

HOW IT WORKS

A draw engine and three loyalty abilities

The Theorist costs {2}{U}{U}, has a blue colour identity and is a Legendary Planeswalker — Jace with three starting loyalty. Its triggered ability makes you draw a card at the beginning of each opponent’s draw step; that opponent’s normal draw happens before this trigger resolves.

Its loyalty abilities create a blue Illusion creature token, return up to one artifact or creature per opponent to its owner’s hand, or draw three cards then put counters on your creatures based on hand size. Those are this card’s mechanics, not Jace, the Mind Sculptor’s four abilities.

Legendary planeswalker status does not by itself make a card eligible as an ordinary Commander. This card has no permission saying it can be your commander. It may be a legal card in a Commander deck without qualifying for the commander role.

PRINTING HISTORY

A 2 October debut, with a separately dated Bundle promo

Reality Fracture (FRA) #43 is the debut, released on 2 October 2026 at mythic rare, illustrated by Ekaterina Burmak. It offers nonfoil and traditional foil.

The same main-set release includes borderless braintwister #363 by Miles Johnston, in nonfoil and traditional foil, and Japan Showcase #405 by Yukie Tajima, in traditional foil only. #415 shares Tajima’s showcase art but is fracture foil only.

Reality Fracture Promos PFRA #43p is a stamped Promo Pack record using Burmak’s original artwork, with nonfoil and foil catalogue availability. Its separate promo set code should not be dropped when identifying a copy.

FRA #443 is the Secret Lair Bundle promo credited to ONIKU kuitai. It is foil-only and catalogued for 23 October 2026, rather than the 2 October main-set date. It remains a FRA-numbered record despite its Secret Lair Bundle distribution; it is not an invented SLD-numbered later reprint.

ARTWORK & FRAMES

Four credited illustrations across six records

Burmak: regular #43 and stamped PFRA #43p share the original artwork. The stamp identifies a promotional edition rather than a new painting.

Johnston: #363 belongs to Wizards’ borderless braintwister series. That specific treatment should not be confused with the set’s echoed-pair panoramas or Special Guests scene.

Tajima: #405 and #415 use the Japan Showcase illustration. The difference between them is traditional versus fracture foil, rather than a different artist or a later set.

ONIKU kuitai: #443 is a separate borderless Bundle interpretation. Its later product date is relevant to chronology even though its set code remains FRA.

FOILS & PREMIUM FINISHES

Japan Showcase is foil-only; the Bundle foil is a different painting

FRA #43, braintwister #363 and PFRA #43p have nonfoil and traditional foil availability. #405 is traditional foil only, while #415 is fracture foil only. A nonfoil #405 is not established by the verified catalogue.

FRA #443 is a traditional-foil-only Secret Lair Bundle promo. It is not the fracture record, and it does not share Tajima’s image. Japan Showcase cards are a treatment category; language still needs checking for the copy you select.

This guide establishes no surge, etched, serialized or autograph version of The Theorist. Product-level special finishes on other Reality Fracture cards do not create an extra printing of this card.

WHICH PRINTING?

Which The Theorist, Jace Beleren printing should you choose?

For the original: FRA #43 gives you Burmak’s main-set card. PFRA #43p is the separate stamped promo alternative.

For braintwister art: #363 is the Johnston record and allows nonfoil or traditional foil.

For Japan Showcase: compare Tajima’s traditional-foil #405 with fracture #415. Identify the exact number and language, not just “showcase Jace.”

For the Bundle illustration: #443 is the later, foil-only ONIKU kuitai record. It is a distinct art preference, not an upgrade that changes the rules.

◇ MANASCOUT PERSPECTIVE

ManaScout pick: FRA #43 against braintwister #363 nonfoil

Compare #43 nonfoil with #363 nonfoil first. Burmak’s regular card and Johnston’s braintwister composition make the artistic choice clear without a premium surface becoming part of the comparison.

If Tajima’s illustration is your goal, #405 is the traditional-foil entry and #415 is the specific fracture alternative. For a Bundle collection, evaluate #443 separately with its actual release date and artist credit.
