MTG PRINTING GUIDE

Dockside Extortionist

Dockside Extortionist began as a nonfoil rare in Commander 2019’s Mystic Intellect deck, then returned with three distinct Double Masters 2022 records and later Avatar Source Material art. Its September 2024 Commander ban is part of that history, but does not make the different physical editions interchangeable. Compare the original, new paintings and foil surfaces with the exact number in view.

HOW IT WORKS

Two mana and a multiplayer Treasure count

Dockside Extortionist costs {1}{R}, is a 1/2 Creature — Goblin Pirate and has a red colour identity. When it enters, it creates Treasure tokens equal to the number of artifacts and enchantments your opponents control as the trigger resolves.

The calculation combines eligible permanents across all opponents and excludes your own. A permanent that is both an artifact and an enchantment is counted once. The Treasures are not created tapped by this ability, which helped make the low casting cost such an explosive acceleration tool.

Commander boards often contain mana rocks, Equipment, enchantments and artifact tokens. That scaling, and the possibility of repeating the enters trigger, explains the card’s historical relevance without changing how one printing compares with another.

PRINTING HISTORY

Mystic Intellect to three Masters variants and Avatar

The first printing is Commander 2019 (C19) #24, released on 23 August 2019 at rare with Forrest Imel art. It was included in Mystic Intellect, the Jeskai preconstructed deck led by Sevinne, the Chronoclasm, and was available only as nonfoil.

Double Masters 2022, released on 8 July 2022, is the first major booster-set reprint. Its regular #107 introduces Lie Setiawan artwork and raises the printing rarity to mythic rare. It has both nonfoil and traditional foil finishes.

The same release includes borderless #360, a separate painting by Douglas Shuler, in nonfoil and traditional foil. Etched #452 instead reuses Setiawan’s artwork and is etched-foil-only. Those are three variants in one set, not three later releases.

The List record PLST #2X2-107 reproduces the regular Masters face with the Planeswalker reprint mark, in nonfoil. It is not an original 2X2 booster copy and does not establish a new artwork or etched option for the PLST record.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Eternal TLE #28 followed on 21 November 2025 with borderless Source Material imagery credited to Viacom. Both nonfoil and traditional foil exist. The crossover printing came after the Commander ban; it did not reverse it.

ARTWORK & FRAMES

Four visual identities, with the etched version sharing one

Forrest Imel: C19 #24 preserves the original preconstructed-deck identity. It is the starting point for a first-printing collection.

Lie Setiawan: regular 2X2 #107, etched #452 and the PLST 2X2-107 reprint share this artwork family. Their product identity and surface differ; the etched card is not a third Masters painting.

Douglas Shuler: borderless 2X2 #360 is a different illustration, making it an artwork choice even in nonfoil.

Viacom: TLE #28 supplies Avatar Source Material art. This is the catalogue credit; the card is still Dockside Extortionist, not a newly legal card with different rules.

FOILS & PREMIUM FINISHES

The exact number matters more than “premium Dockside”

C19 #24 and PLST #2X2-107 are nonfoil-only. Regular 2X2 #107, borderless #360 and TLE #28 offer nonfoil and traditional foil.

2X2 #452 is etched foil only. It shares Setiawan’s art with #107, while Shuler’s #360 has ordinary nonfoil/foil choices. A foil #107 is not the etched record, and an etched listing illustrated with #360’s painting needs clarification.

The source shortlist does not establish a surge, confetti or serialized Dockside. A crossover set or a reflective digital preview is not evidence of those finishes.

WHICH PRINTING?

Which Dockside Extortionist printing should you choose?

For the original: C19 #24 records where Dockside began. It is a nonfoil deck card, not a first-set pack foil.

For the conventional Masters reprint: compare #107 with the specifically marked PLST reprint. Decide whether a 2X2 set copy or the later reprint product matters to your collection.

For alternate borderless art: Shuler’s #360 is the key comparison with Imel’s debut. For etched foil specifically, identify #452 instead.

For Avatar: TLE #28 offers its own imagery and two finishes. Choose it for that presentation; it confers no additional Commander permission.

◇ MANASCOUT PERSPECTIVE

ManaScout pick: C19 #24 for history, 2X2 #360 for art

Dockside went from a rare in a preconstructed deck to a premium Masters reprint and a banned Commander card. Our first-printing choice is C19 #24; our alternate-art comparison is 2X2 #360 nonfoil, which makes Shuler’s illustration the main decision.

Legality checked 4 November 2026: Dockside remains on the official Commander banned list. The ban took effect on 23 September 2024. It applies to the card identity across every printing, including the later Avatar version. This guide is a collector comparison, not permission to include Dockside in an official Commander deck.
