MTG PRINTING GUIDE

Jeska's Will

Jeska’s Will has a short but increasingly varied history: Izzy’s Commander Legends original, a wider presentation of the same painting, Miguel Mercado’s Storm’s Will and the later Mystical Archive artwork families. The card’s two modes stay the same while the release, frame, language and finish change. The collector task is matching those fields to the exact number.

QUICK ANSWER

When was Jeska's Will first printed?

Jeska's Will first appeared in Commander Legends (CMR), 20 November 2020. The original record is CMR #187, at rare, illustrated by Izzy. Original finish availability: nonfoil, traditional foil.

HOW IT WORKS

Two modes, with the commander check made as you cast

Jeska’s Will costs {2}{R}, is a Sorcery and has a red colour identity. One mode produces red mana equal to the cards in a target opponent’s hand; the other exiles your top three cards and lets you play them that turn.

Controlling a commander as you cast the spell lets you choose both modes. It need not be Jeska or your own commander. Removing that commander after the spell has been cast does not undo the chosen modes. The opponent’s hand size is measured as the mana mode resolves.

Playing the exiled cards still requires paying costs and following timing rules and land-play limits. The permission lasts for that turn; it does not put the cards into your hand.

PRINTING HISTORY

Original and extended art, followed by two crossover/art branches

Commander Legends (CMR) #187 debuted on 20 November 2020 at rare, with Izzy artwork and nonfoil or traditional foil. The same release’s #668 is extended art with the same illustration and the same ordinary finish choices.

Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate #799 in 2022 and Murders at Karlov Manor Commander #156 in 2024 reuse Izzy’s artwork as nonfoil Commander-deck reprints. They are later products, unlike #668’s same-release extended treatment.

Secret Lair: Marvel’s Storm introduced SLD #1744 in November 2024. Its alternate display name is Storm’s Will, with borderless artwork by Miguel Mercado and nonfoil/foil availability. It remains Jeska’s Will’s underlying card identity.

Secrets of Strixhaven Mystical Archive (SOA), released on 24 April 2026, adds #44 by Eliot Baum and the Japanese artwork family #109/#174 by Shiro Yayoi. The latter pair separates a nonfoil record from its silver-scroll foil counterpart.

ARTWORK & FRAMES

Extending Izzy’s painting is different from changing the artist

CMR #187 and extended-art #668 share Izzy’s illustration. CLB #799 and MKC #156 also preserve that artwork family. The wider frame of #668 does not establish a separate painting.

Mercado’s Storm’s Will #1744 is a genuine crossover illustration change. Match the Jeska’s Will rules identity even when the display title is different.

SOA #44 has Baum’s global Archive illustration. Japanese #109 and silver-scroll #174 share Yayoi’s artwork and use a different presentation from #44. The set code is SOA, not the 2021 Mystical Archive’s STA.

FOILS & PREMIUM FINISHES

A later Japanese foil has its own number

CMR #187 and #668 offer nonfoil and traditional foil. The two shortlisted Commander-deck reprints are nonfoil-only. SLD #1744 has nonfoil and traditional foil versions.

SOA #44 offers nonfoil and traditional foil. SOA #109 is nonfoil-only, while #174 is foil-only with the silver-scroll treatment. Both credit Shiro Yayoi and are Japanese-language records. Do not infer a normal foil #109 from a generic finish selector.

Silver-scroll is the supported treatment on #174; it is not a reason to call the card etched, surge or fracture foil. A missing price for either Japanese record says nothing about its actual finish availability.

WHICH PRINTING?

Which Jeska’s Will printing should you choose?

For the original: CMR #187 records the debut. Compare #668 if you prefer more room for Izzy’s illustration while keeping the same release family.

For a conventional later deck copy: compare CLB #799 and MKC #156. Both preserve the familiar artwork without a foil requirement.

For Storm artwork: SLD #1744 is the relevant crossover record. The alternate display name does not make it a different spell.

For Archive collecting: compare Baum’s #44 with Yayoi’s #109. Choose #174 specifically for the Japanese silver-scroll foil, rather than assuming every Archive number offers every finish.

◇ MANASCOUT PERSPECTIVE

ManaScout pick: original #187 against Storm’s Will #1744

Compare CMR #187 nonfoil with SLD #1744 nonfoil to decide between the original Magic illustration and Mercado’s crossover treatment. If Izzy’s painting wins, #668 is a frame upgrade to consider separately.

For a Japanese-art collection, #109 is the straightforward nonfoil target and #174 is the deliberate premium finish choice. The printing choice should follow the art and language you want to own.
